The Institute of Crop Breeding and Cultivation at Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) originated from the Shanghai Agricultural Experiment Station, which was established in 1956 through a joint effort of Xinshi Farm, Huacao Farm, and Liming Agricultural Production Cooperative. The institute employs 60 staff members, including 55 scientific and technical personnel. It is primarily engaged in the selection and breeding of high-quality, high-yielding, and disease-resistant rice, oilseed rape, and corn varieties, as well as the research and application of cultivation techniques. Additionally, the institute focuses on the preservation and processing of agricultural products, as well as irradiation processing technology and its industrialization and application.
In recent years, the institute has developed modern breeding technology systems, including biotechnology, anther culture, smallspore culture, and haploid techniques. Notable achievements include the breeding of high-quality hybrid japonica rice varieties such as “Shen You 1”, “Hua You 14”, and “Shen You 26”. The institute also concentrates on the research and integration of storage, preservation, and deep processing technologies for vegetables, fruits, edible fungi, and other agricultural products to meet the needs of modern urban green agriculture.
