Institute of Ecological Agriculture and Animal Husbandry

The Institute of Ecological Agriculture and Animal Husbandry at Shanxi Agricultural University (SXAU) was founded in 2019 and is a research institution specializing in agricultural scientific research and experiments, breeding and promotion of virus-free potato varieties, promotion, exchange, and training of crop production technologies, and other related social services.

Key research areas include the collection, conservation, innovation, and utilization of germplasm resources, breeding of new varieties of small grains such as peas, millet, oats, potatoes, and buckwheat, supporting technologies for crop production, and the research and application of new technologies and methods for crop breeding. The institute is affiliated with the Youyu Comprehensive Experiment Station of the National Oat and Buckwheat Industry System and the Youyu Comprehensive Experiment Station of the National Millet and Sorghum Industry System.

The institute will take full advantage of the geographical benefits of the interlaced agricultural and animal husbandry belt of Yanmenguan, addressing local development needs, building a high-yield and efficient crop demonstration area with regional characteristics, and strengthening applied research and achievement transformations.

Currently, the institute has a staff of 12 people, including the head of the Youyu Comprehensive Experiment Station of the National Oat and Buckwheat Industry System. The scientific research and experimental land spans 1,535 mu, with the Shuozhou base covering 500 mu and the Youyu base covering 535 mu, including 88.4 mu of experimental land outside the east gate of the old city of Youyu County. The laboratory area is 600 m², which includes a genetic breeding laboratory, a soil and fertilizer laboratory, and a grain quality analysis laboratory.
