Institute of Ecological and Environmental Protection

The Institute of Ecological and Environmental Protection of Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) was founded in July 2002 through the merger of the former Institute of Environmental Science (Soil Fertilizer Institute) and the Institute of Plant Protection. It operates as an affiliated unit of the Shanghai Soil Fertilizer Society and currently has 77 employees. The institute focuses on several research and development areas, including plant water, fertilizer, and pesticide control, soil pollution and remediation, pest monitoring and green prevention, ecological recycling agriculture, and the integration of planting and animal husbandry. Other areas of research include monitoring and managing agricultural surface pollution, ecological remediation of water pollution in lakes and watersheds, as well as the green production and utilization of beneficial biological resources.

The institute is home to nine scientific and technological platforms. These include the National Observatory of Agricultural Environmental Science (Fengxian), the Shanghai Comprehensive Experiment Station of the National Freshwater Fish Industry Technology System, and the Key Laboratory of Green and Low Carbon on the Southeast Coast of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Other platforms include the Key Laboratory of Rice-Fishery Crops of MARD, the Scientific Observatory for Agricultural Environment and Cultivated Land Conservation of MARD, the Experimental Pesticides Registry of MARD, the Shanghai Low Carbon Agricultural Engineering Research Center, the Shanghai Agricultural Environmental Protection Monitoring Station, and the Key Laboratory of Facility Horticulture Technology of Shanghai.

In recent years, the institute has supported rural revitalization by establishing 25 demonstration bases, 12 demonstration villages, and 16 expert workstations, contributing to agricultural development. Additionally, it has set up demonstration bases for scientific and technological cooperation in Guoluo Prefecture in Qinghai, Wenshan Prefecture in Yunnan, and Zunyi City in Guizhou.

The institute actively promotes international exchanges and cooperation, maintaining long-term academic relationships with institutions such as Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), Kobe University, Biwako Research Institute (BIARI), Helmholtz National Research Center for Environmental Research (NRCER) in Germany, the Australian Academy of Commonwealth Sciences (AAAS) in the USA, the International Institute of Phosphorus and Potash Research (IIPPR) in Canada, and Bristol University in the United Kingdom.
