The Institute of Economic Crops and Beer Raw Materials of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (Institute of Chinese Medicinal Materials of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences) was established in November 2006. The institute is focused on the innovation and preservation of beer raw materials, characteristic economic crop germplasm, as well as the protection and development of rare and endangered medicinal plants.
The institute consists of seven laboratories: Barley Breeding Laboratory, Highland Barley Breeding Laboratory, Characteristic Economic Crop Laboratory, Major Chinese Medicinal Materials Laboratory, Minor Characteristic Chinese Medicinal Materials Laboratory, Chinese Medicinal Materials Resources and Nutrition Regulation Laboratory, and Biotechnology Laboratory. It also includes six centers and laboratory experimental stations: Gansu Branch of the National Barley Improvement Center, Northwest Beer Barley and Malt Quality Testing and Analysis Laboratory, Gansu Province Chinese Medicinal Materials Germplasm Improvement and Quality Control Engineering Laboratory, Barley and Highland Barley Breeding Station of Yellow Sheep Wheat Crop Breeding Experiment Station, Minxian Chinese Medicinal Materials Experiment Station, and Longdong (Huachi) Chinese Medicinal Materials Experiment Station.
The main research areas focus on the selection (introduction) and breeding of new varieties, efficient cultivation technology, and industrial development of beer raw materials and characteristic economic crops. Additionally, the institute works on the innovation and preservation of Gansu authentic Chinese medicinal materials germplasm, as well as the breeding and cultivation technology of Chinese medicinal plants. It also provides technical consultation and talent training. The institute currently employs 31 staff members.
