Institute of Forest and Fruit Tree Research

The Institute of Forest and Fruit Tree Research, affiliated with Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS), was established in 2002, co-located with the Institute of Crops. It was formerly known as the Fruit and Flower Research Laboratory of the Institute of Horticulture, which became an independent office in March 2011. The institute has 49 employees, including 26 senior titles, 35 doctoral degrees, and 14 master’s degrees. The research efforts are organized into 7 subject groups: peach, pear, grape, strawberry, specialty fruit trees, flowers, and forest trees.

The institute primarily focuses on the collection, preservation, evaluation, and utilization of germplasm resources for peach, pear, strawberry, grape, and other fruit trees. It is also involved in the research of new variety selection and breeding, fruit tree cultivation techniques, and the development of new technologies and models for cultivating fruit trees. Additionally, the institute works on selecting and breeding new varieties of medium- and high-grade potted flowers and ornamental seedlings.

The institute is equipped with several key platforms, including the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Facility Horticulture Technology, the Molecular Biology and Quality Identification Laboratory, the Shanghai Plant Seedling Histoculture Professional Technical Service Platform, and the Modern Plant Factory R&D Platform. Notable roles at the institute include a national peach industry technology system post scientist, two Shanghai modern agriculture (fruit and flower) industry technology system chief experts, and a national grape industry technology system Shanghai comprehensive experimental station. Additionally, one researcher has been selected as a Shanghai leading talent.
