The Institute of Maize and Upland Crops at Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ZAAS) was founded in 1958 in Dongyang, Zhejiang. It operates under both ZAAS and the local municipal government. The institute is home to 27 staff members and focuses on upland crop germplasm collection and utilization, new cultivar breeding, cultivation techniques, and disease control. It also engages in multi-functional product development and provides consulting, training, and technology extension services.
The institute has released over 50 new maize cultivars and 3 millet cultivars. Six of its maize cultivars have set records as the highest-yielding sweet, glutinous, and common maize cultivars in the province. Several of its maize cultivars have been selected as major cultivars for the province, and its technologies have been recommended by the provincial government for widespread adoption by farmers in Zhejiang.
