Institute of Plant Protection and Microbiology

The Institute of Plant Protection and Microbiology at Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ZAAS) was established in 1924 and currently has 56 employees, including 34 senior research fellows. The institute focuses on crop protection, microbial technology, and efficient green eco-agriculture.

Its research priorities in plant protection include farmland ecosystem function and safety evaluation, harmful organism (disease, pests, weeds, and invasive species) outbreak patterns and mechanisms, and sustainable control techniques such as physical and chemical insect traps, biocontrol of pests, immune inducement, eco-management, and optimized cultivation. In microbiology, it emphasizes ecological remediation and pollution control in animal farms, the function mechanism of intestinal microorganisms, and the development of microbial pesticides.

In recent years, the institute has undertaken more than 200 projects funded by national or provincial agencies, achieving significant scientific breakthroughs in key areas such as rice blast and rice false mut outbreak mechanisms and their prevention and control, the occurrence pattern and eco-control of major rice pest insects, green management of major vegetable diseases, control of key invasive pest insects, and microbial remediation of polluted waters.
