The Qinghai Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences (QAAFS) – 青海省农林科学院 was founded in May 1951. It consists of 8 professional research institutes, including crop breeding and cultivation (including dryland agriculture), plant protection, horticulture, soil fertilizer, forestry, spring rapeseed, biotechnology, and wild plant resources. The Academy is home to 9 national-level scientific and technological innovation platforms, such as the National Crop Germplasm Resources Duplicate Library, the National Spring Rapeseed Improvement Sub-Center, the Key Laboratory of Germplasm Resources Conservation and Genetic Improvement of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of MARA, and the State Forestry Administration Key Laboratory of Forest Genetic Breeding on the Qinghai Plateau. It also hosts 7 national-level scientific observation and experiment stations, including the Spring Rapeseed Scientific Observation and Experiment Station of the Ministry of Agriculture, and 2 national modern agricultural science and technology demonstration bases: the Plateau Characteristic Agriculture Demonstration Base (Chengbei) and the Alpine Potato Base (Huangyuan).
With a current staff of 178 employees, the Academy has made significant breakthroughs in the breeding and research of plateau specialty crops such as spring rapeseed, potatoes, highland barley, and broad beans, resulting in the development of over 157 crop varieties. The Academy also conducts research on various topics, including potato seed potato detoxification, water and fertilizer integration, comprehensive prevention and control of farmland diseases, insect pests, and weeds, as well as forest genetic breeding and ecological protection in cold and arid areas. These efforts provide effective scientific and technological support for the development of modern characteristic agriculture and ecological construction in Qinghai’s plateau region.
