The Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) – 上海市农业科学院 was established in 1960. SAAS comprises ten research institutes, an integrated service center, an integrated experiment station, and Shanghai Co-Elite Agricultural Sci-Tech (Group) Co., Ltd. Its current research covers a wide range of agricultural fields, including grain and oilseed crop germplasm innovation and application; germplasm innovation and efficient cultivation of fruit trees and ornamentals; new variety breeding and efficient cultivation of horticultural crops; germplasm creation and industrialized production techniques for edible mushrooms; sustainable livestock and poultry farming and control of epidemic diseases; ecological agriculture and harmful organism control; metropolitan agriculture theory and digital agricultural technology; efficient biotech breeding technology innovation and application; agricultural product quality and safety; and preservation and processing technology for agricultural products.
At present, SAAS employs more than 800 staff members, including over 700 professionals and technical experts. Over the years, SAAS has developed long-term partnerships with world-class universities and research institutions in over 30 countries and regions. It has also pioneered new models for international cooperation, establishing multiple international research platforms, including the CIMMYT–China Specialty Maize Research Center, the China-Belgium Center of Reference Materials for Mycotoxins, and the China-Vietnam International Joint Laboratory for Agricultural Science, among others.
