Southwest University (SWU) – 西南大学 – in Chongqing was founded in 2005 through the merger of Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University, both of which trace their origins back to 1906. The university is particularly renowned for its teacher education and agricultural education programs. Notable Chinese scholars associated with SWU include Hou Guangqiong, known as the father of agrology, and Xiang Zhonghuai, who identified the silkworm genome. Yuan Longping, the father of Chinese hybrid rice, was also a graduate of Southwest Agricultural University.
