The Sugarcane Research Institute of the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (YAAS) was founded in 1956. It covers an area of 350 acres (of which 300 acres are in Kailuan and 50 acres are in Ruili). The Institute focuses on applied and development research, actively carrying out relevant basic research and high-tech applied research. Its main goal is to solve significant and critical scientific and technological issues in the development of sugarcane production in Yunnan and nationally, providing technological support for the growth of the sugarcane industry.
The Institute has six research centers, including the Sugarcane Germplasm Resources Research Center, the Sugarcane Genetic Breeding Research Center, the Sugarcane Agronomy Research Center, the Sugarcane Pests Prevention and Control Research Center, the Sugarcane Sugar Deep Processing and Comprehensive Utilization of By-products Research and Development Center, and the Fruit Sugar Cane Research and Development Center. It also has a Ruili Sugarcane Breeding Station for Ruili Sugarcane Hybrids in Ruili, along with several management organizations, such as the Party and Government Office, Finance Section, Scientific Research and Management Section, Administration Section, and Scientific and Technological Development Center.
At present, the Sugarcane Research Institute has five national research platforms, including the R&D Center of National Sugar Industry Technology System, National Sugarcane Germplasm Resource Nursery, Yunnan Branch of National Sugar Improvement Center, National Inland Sugarcane Hybrid Breeding Base, National Sugarcane Good Original Seed Breeding Base, and the Field Scientific Observation Experimental Station of Sugarcane Germplasm of MARA. It also has two foreign cooperation platforms, the China-Sri Lanka Sugarcane Joint Research Center and the South Asia Southeast Asia-oriented Sugarcane Variety Improvement Joint R&D Center. Additionally, the Institute has five provincial and ministerial-level R&D platforms: the Yunnan Sugarcane Industry Engineering Research Center, Yunnan Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Genetic Improvement, Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences Yunnan Agricultural Products Quality Inspection Center, Yunnan Science and Technology Cultivation Space, and the Yunnan Provincial High-quality Science and Technology Education Base. The Institute currently employs 94 people.
