Established in 1956, the Sugarcane Research Institute of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GXAAS) specializes in sugarcane research, focusing on the selection and breeding of new sugarcane varieties, the innovation of production technology, and the transformation of scientific achievements. The institute is equipped with several research departments, including the Breeding Research Office, Plant Protection Research Office, Cultivation Research Office (Mechanization Research Office), Germplasm Resources Research Office, Physiology and Ecology Research Office, Biotechnology Research Office, and Molecular Breeding Research Office. The institute currently has 83 employees.
The institute covers an area of 1,100 mu (approximately 73.33 hectares). It also operates additional breeding bases, including a Hainan sugarcane hybrid breeding base and a Longan Dingdang sugarcane breeding base. The institute houses several important research platforms, such as the Guangxi Key Laboratory of Sugarcane Biotechnology and Genetic Improvement under MARA, the State-Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Sugarcane Breeding and Cultivation Technology, the National Sugar Improvement Center of Guangxi Sugarcane Variety Improvement Sub-center, the “One Belt and One Road” International Sugarcane Industry Science and Technology Institute, the National Crop Variety Display and Evaluation Base, the Guangxi Sugarcane Genetic Improvement Key Laboratory, and the Guangxi Sugarcane Seed Breeding Center.
