The Tianjin Academy of Agricultural Sciences (TAAS) – 天津市农业科学院 was founded in 1979 and is a comprehensive agricultural research institution focused on applied research. The academy has 524 active employees, of which 270 hold master’s degrees or higher. TAAS has developed modern agricultural science and technology innovation bases, including a 3,000-mu facility for general agricultural research and a 500-mu facility dedicated to animal husbandry science and technology innovation.
The academy’s main research areas include crop genetic breeding, agricultural biotechnology, animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, agricultural resources and environment, plant protection, vegetable genetic breeding, agricultural product quality, safety and nutrition, agricultural information, and agricultural product preservation and processing technologies. TAAS’s research is tailored to the development needs of modern urban agriculture in Tianjin. It has positioned itself at the international or domestic advanced level in the fields of cucumber, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, hybrid japonica rice breeding, and in disciplines related to the preservation, safety production, and processing of agricultural products.
TAAS is home to 13 research institutes, including the Cucumber Research Institute, Institute for Agricultural Products Preservation and Processing Technology, Institute for Rural Economics and Regional Planning, Farm Crops Research Institute, Institute for Modern Urban Agriculture, Institute for Plant Protection, Institute of Germplasm Resources and Biotechnology, Tianjin Crop Germplasm Resource Bank, Forestry and Fruit Tree Research Institute, Institute for Food Quality, Safety and Nutrition, Research Institute for Agricultural Resources and Environment, Vegetable Research Institute, Information Institute, and the Institute for Animal Husbandry.
