The China Institute for Rural Studies (CIRS) at Tsinghua University – 清华大学农村研究 was established in 2011 as a university-level academic and research institution and an interdisciplinary platform for agriculture-related studies. Affiliated with the School of Public Policy and Management, it is one of Tsinghua University’s key think tanks. CIRS focuses on addressing strategic and complex issues concerning agriculture, rural areas, and farmers, commonly referred to as the “Sannong” Issues. The institute aims to serve as a top think tank supporting policy development for rural reform and sustainable development in China.
CIRS conducts research across six primary fields:
- Agricultural and rural modernization
- Food security
- Rural resources and environment and sustainable development
- Integrated urban-rural development
- Digital villages and rural construction
- Rural governance and rural revitalization
