The predecessor of the Vegetable Research Institute of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GAAS) was founded in 1938. The Institute mainly carries out innovation and utilization of germplasm resources such as vegetables, melons, and edible fungi, and breeding of excellent varieties; research and demonstration of high-yield and high-quality vegetable cultivation technology; research and equipment development of key technologies for facility vegetable production; and the promotion of new technology for vegetable production, technical consultation, and training.
At present, there are departments for watermelon research, solanaceae (pepper, tomato) new variety breeding research, germplasm resource (cucumber, pumpkin, watermelon rootstock, lettuce, molecular breeding) utilization research, edible fungi research, and vegetable cultivation (cultivation technology, cultivation physiology, facility engineering, special vegetables) research. The institute has 51 employees.
