Founded in 1955, the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences (XAAS) – 新疆农业科学院 is a comprehensive agricultural research institution directly under the People’s Government of the Autonomous Region.
The academy currently has 17 research institutes (centers) and 10 experimental stations. As of September 2023, there are 931 employees.
As the main force of agricultural science and technology in the autonomous region, the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences closely focuses on the scientific and technological needs of the autonomous region’s agricultural development at different stages, and focuses on cultivating and building key disciplines with distinct regional characteristics, such as crop genetics and breeding, crop cultivation, agricultural biotechnology, plant protection, applied agricultural microorganisms, agricultural resources and ecological environment, agricultural engineering and mechanical equipment, facility agriculture, agricultural economy and agricultural system engineering, agricultural information technology application, agricultural product quality standards, and agricultural product storage and processing.
The institute has 50 national and ministerial science and technology platforms, 26 autonomous region science and technology platforms, and 37 medium- and long-term scientific research bases. The institute has established cooperative relations with scientific research institutions in more than 20 countries, and has built an international cooperation base of the Ministry of Science and Technology, a demonstration base for the introduction of talents in the autonomous region, and an international joint research center for integrated pest control technology in Central Asia, etc.
