The Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (YAAS) – 云南省农业科学院 can be traced back to 1912. The primary functions and responsibilities of the academy include conducting research on overall agricultural issues in Yunnan Province, addressing key, strategic, and major agricultural science and technology challenges, promoting scientific and technological innovation, and supporting the development of modern agriculture with a focus on the region’s unique plateau characteristics. YAAS provides agricultural science and technology support and leadership for the development of agriculture in Yunnan Province.
In addition to supporting regional agricultural development according to national strategies, the academy also engages in international exchanges and cooperation in agricultural science and technology. It offers services and support to the agricultural economy of Yunnan and its neighboring regions.
YAAS has 17 research institutes specializing in a variety of agricultural fields, such as grain crops, agricultural environmental resources, horticultural crops, cash crops, biotechnology, and germplasm resources. Other research focuses include agricultural economics, plant protection, soil and fertilizer science, agro-ecological restoration, and agricultural product processing. The institutes are located in Kunming, Honghe, Xishuangbanna, Baoshan, Lijiang, Chuxiong, and other cities. The academy’s research includes key areas such as genetic breeding, agricultural biotechnology, plant protection, agricultural resource conservation, and the improvement of agricultural product quality and food safety.
By the end of 2022, YAAS employed 1684 active employees.
