The Fruit Tree Research Institute of Fujian Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FAAS), established in 1960, is located in Preah Vihear, Xindian Town, Jin’an District, Fuzhou City. The institute covers an area of 32 hectares and is a professional research institution focused on the selection and breeding of new varieties of fruit trees, cultivation technology, biotechnology, physiology, biochemistry, storage and preservation, germplasm resources collection and preservation, and innovative use. It is also engaged in the R&D of related technologies and products and the promotion of technological achievements. The institute employs 72 staff members.
The institute operates a variety of research platforms, including:
- National Fruit Tree Germplasm Nursery of Fuzhou Longan Loquat
- National Horticultural Germplasm Resource Bank of Fuzhou Longan Loquat
- National Horticultural Germplasm Resource Bank of Subtropical Fruit Trees
- Fujian Provincial Specialized Fruit Tree Germplasm Resource Nursery
- Fujian Deciduous Fruit Tree Germplasm Resource Nursery
- National Field Observatory for Longan Loquat of Fuzhou
- MARA Certified Pesticide Effectiveness Trial Unit for Field Pesticides
- Fujian Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences Fruit and Seedling Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Testing Center
In addition, the institute is home to the Fuzhou Comprehensive Experiment Station of the National Pear Industry Technology System and the Fuzhou Comprehensive Experiment Station of the National Grape Industry Technology System. Research rooms within the institute include those dedicated to longan loquat, citrus, deciduous fruit trees, characteristic fruit trees, fruit quality, and post-harvest treatment.
The institute has collected and preserved more than 2,000 germplasm resources of fruit trees and has cultivated over 500 new varieties (lines) of fruit trees, including longan, loquat, lychee, mandarin orange, olive, prune, yellow skin, papaya, peach, plum, pear, grape, persimmon, dragon fruit, and others.
