The Grain Crops Research Institute of Hainan Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HNAAS) has 30 employees. It includes six scientific research institutes: the Resource Research Laboratory, the Breeding Research Laboratory, the Crop Physiology and Cultivation Research Laboratory, the Dry Cereals Research Laboratory, and the Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Breeding in Hainan Province. The institute also has three innovation teams: the Green and Efficient Industrialization and Enhancement of Grain Crops Engineering Team, the Tropical Wild Rice Resource Innovation and Utilization Team, and the Maize Molecular Design and Breeding Team.
The institute has established several scientific research platforms, including the Haikou Branch of the National Rice Improvement Center, the Haikou Comprehensive Experiment Station of the National Rice Industry Technology System, the Regional Experiment Station of National Crop Varieties, the Provincial Key Experiment of Crop Genetic Breeding, the Provincial Wild Rice Germplasm Resource Nursery, and the Provincial Sweet Potato Germplasm Resource Nursery. In Haikou, Chengmai, and Sanya, the institute operates a molecular biology laboratory covering 2,000 square meters, an 80-hectare scientific research and test base, and a 1,500-square-meter cold storage facility for germplasm resources.
The institute primarily focuses on the conservation, collection, evaluation, new gene discovery, germplasm innovation, and breeding of new varieties for wild rice, rice, maize, sweet potato, peanut, soybean, and other grain and oil crops. It also conducts research and development, demonstration, and promotion of new technologies for simple, high-efficiency, low-carbon, and green cultivation. Notably, it carries out the protection and innovative use of Hainan wild rice and shares 91 newly bred rice varieties for national utilization.
