The Institute of Biotechnology of Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FAAS) was established in 1989. The institute conducts fundamental and applied research in several areas, including the mining and utilization of gene resources in major crops, biological breeding techniques, creation of new materials, biosafety evaluation, crop variety design, and agro-biological transgenics. It also focuses on research related to aquatic animal pathogenesis and immunology, disease prevention and control technologies, and the promotion of healthy aquaculture. Additionally, it studies the growth, development, and genetic improvement of characteristic horticultural plants and biological seedling technology. The institute offers technical services such as consultation, training, and results transformation.
The institute has 61 employees and operates eight research laboratories, including Crop Molecular Design Technology, Rice Germplasm Resource Innovation and Biological Breeding, Maize Germplasm Resource Innovation and Biological Breeding, Aquatic Pathogenesis and Disease Prevention and Control, Aquatic Green and Healthy Breeding, Characteristic Aquatic Species Breeding, Characteristic Horticultural Germplasm Innovation and Seedling Engineering, and Characteristic Horticultural Seedling Growth and Developmental Regulation. The laboratory is also home to the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Genetic Engineering in Fujian Province.
The institute hosts three provincial research platforms: Fujian Agricultural Genetic Engineering Key Laboratory, Fujian Rice Transgenic Breeding Engineering Research Center, and Fujian Aquatic Disease Control Engineering Research Center. The institute is recognized for its contribution to scientific research, including publishing studies in Nature on the use of molecular technology to reduce methane emissions from rice paddies.
