The Key Laboratory of Plant Pest Control and Prevention in Hainan Province is part of the Plant Protection Research Institute of Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It consists of four specialized research rooms: the Plant Disease Research Room, Agricultural Insects and Biological Control Research Room, Agricultural Products Quality and Safety Research Room, and the Office. The laboratory spans over 2,500 square meters for scientific research, with an additional 600 square meters dedicated to the plant nematode resource preservation nursery. It also includes an 1,100-square-meter intelligent net room shed at the Yongfa base in Chengmai, as well as more than 100 Mu of experimental land in Haikou, Chengmai, Wuzhishan, and Ledong.
Research Directions:
- Diagnosis, rapid detection, and identification of major crop pests and diseases.
- Monitoring the occurrence and catastrophic changes of major crop pests and diseases.
- Genetic differentiation and molecular characterization of major crop pathogens and pests.
- Resistance monitoring, evaluation, and management of crop pathogens and pests.
- Development of high-efficiency, multi-target chemical control technologies.
- Green prevention and control technology systems for major crop pests and diseases.
- Excavation, screening, development, and utilization of natural enemy resources for biological control.
Advantages and Characteristics: The Key Laboratory focuses on the major pests and diseases affecting tropical agriculture in Hainan. It combines applied basic research with practical pest control technologies. Leveraging other platform resources and qualifications from its affiliated unit, the laboratory possesses several key advantages:
Basic Plant Protection Resources: The laboratory has a comprehensive database for important crop pathogens, soil microorganisms, and natural enemies in Hainan. It also maintains experimental populations of key pests and natural enemies. It utilizes technical platforms for the isolation, characterization, and preservation of plant pathogenic bacteria, as well as agricultural insect rearing.
Long-term Scientific Observation: The laboratory conducts ongoing scientific observation of important pests and natural enemies in Hainan. It systematically collects and preserves pathogenic bacteria, soil microbial resources, and other natural enemy biological resources. Data collected is shared on national platforms such as the Modern Agricultural Industrial Technology System Management Platform, the National Plant Protection Data Center, the National Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Data Center, the National Agricultural Microorganism Data Center, and the National Natural Enemy and Insect Resources Data Center.
Pesticide Efficacy Testing: The laboratory is a certified unit for pesticide efficacy registration tests by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA). It conducts domestic and international pesticide registration efficacy tests, providing technical services for pesticide companies. It is a pioneer in the province for testing chemical pesticide prevention and control technologies for major pests and diseases. The laboratory identifies high-efficiency, low-toxicity chemical agents and techniques suitable for pest control in the province.
Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Testing: The laboratory holds CATL certification for agricultural product quality and safety inspections from the Hainan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, as well as CMA certification for inspection and testing organizations from the Hainan Provincial Market Supervision Administration. It provides inspection and testing services for organic pollutants such as pesticide and veterinary residues in plant-based food, vegetables, fruits, animal-based food, and aquatic products. It also offers physical, chemical, and elemental analysis of soil.
