Livestock and Veterinary Research Institute

The Livestock and Veterinary Research Institute of Hainan Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HNAAS) was established in 1960 at Hongdao Breeding Farm, Yinggen Town, Qiongzhong County. The institute has 26 employees.

The institute houses several specialized laboratories, including the Livestock Research Laboratory, Poultry Research Laboratory, Animal Medicine Research Laboratory, Animal Nutrition Research Laboratory, and Animal Biotechnology Research Laboratory. It also operates two comprehensive experimental stations: the National Broiler Industry Technology System and the National Waterfowl Industry Technology System. Key laboratories include the Key Laboratory of Tropical Animal Breeding and Epidemic Disease of Hainan Province, the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Animals and Pathogen Biology of Animal Epidemics, and the Hainan Provincial Livestock and Poultry Engineering and Technology Research Center. The institute also manages the Wujishan Pig National Breeding Ground.

The institute’s primary responsibilities include the collection, preservation, identification, and evaluation of local livestock and poultry germplasm resources. It focuses on the selection and breeding of new breeds and supporting lines of livestock and poultry, as well as research on animal nutrition, feed science, healthy breeding technologies, and animal reproduction. The institute also conducts research on animal diseases, zoonoses, monitoring and early warning of major animal diseases, and the development of veterinary drugs (including veterinary biologics). Furthermore, it promotes the application of good livestock and poultry breeds, best practices, and new veterinary drugs through technical training and services. The institute is involved in the construction and management of national, ministerial, and provincial livestock and poultry science and health research platforms and provides scientific and technological services to support Hainan’s animal husbandry development and the creation of disease-free animal zones.
