The Tropical Horticulture Research Institute of Hainan Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HNAAS) is primarily focused on the collection and preservation of economic plant resources related to tropical specialties. The institute’s research also includes the identification and evaluation of these resources, analysis of the mechanisms behind key agricultural production phenomena, and the molecular basis of important agronomic traits. Other research areas include the excavation of excellent germplasm, the creation and breeding of new varieties, introduction of new varieties, development of seedling breeding technology, seedling production, supporting cultivation techniques, product development, and the transformation of scientific achievements.
The institute operates with four key research offices: the Flower Research Office, Garden Plants Research Office, Economic Crops Research Office, and Biotechnology Research Office.
With a team of 28 employees, the institute includes two professional research teams: the Tropical Oil Tea Resource Cultivation and Innovative Utilization Team and the Prunus Germplasm Resource Innovation and Utilization Team.
The institute has established various platforms for the preservation and evaluation of economic plant resources, including the germplasm bank of Prunus tricornutum, the germplasm resource nursery for tropical oil tea, the germplasm resource nursery for tropical orchids, and the germplasm resource nursery for mulberry. Nearly 20,000 copies of economic plant resources of tropical specialties have been collected and preserved.
Additionally, the institute has set up several key platforms, including the National Observatory and Experimental Station of Germplasm Resources of Chenghai, the Key Laboratory of Innovative Utilization of Germplasm Resources of Specialty Economic Plants of Hainan Province, and the Center of Cell Engineering of Economic Plants. It also collaborates with various research platforms, such as enterprise-university cooperation bases.
