Participatory plant breeding: Cases studies from rural China

Categories & Keywords

This publication reflects on the development of Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB) over the past two decades. The book brings together PPB pioneers, including a group of Chinese professionals who adapted the approach to new regions and crops. Among the cases discussed are initiatives in China’s Guangxi province, where farmers have worked on improving local maize varieties, and in the Tibetan Plateau, where PPB has helped adapt barley to changing environmental conditions. Other case studies include efforts to revitalize traditional rice varieties in Southeast Asia and the development of drought-resistant crops in East Africa.
