Since 2018, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) – 中华人民共和国生态与环境 has been overseeing national ecological and environmental policies, as well as climate change policies. MEE sets national emission reduction targets and works with other governmental departments to implement environmental protection measures. The Ministry also supervises the ecological environment in rural areas, ensures the environmental safety of biological technologies, and leads biodiversity protection and biological species conservation efforts.
MEE is responsible for environmental education and coordinates major scientific research projects and engineering demonstrations in the ecological and environmental sectors. It also conducts international cooperation projects and exchanges related to environmental protection, as well as the implementation of international conventions. In addition, MEE supervises action plans to prevent air, water, and soil pollution.
