Founded in 1964 as the Shanghai Institute of Domestic Animal Parasitology, the Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute (SHVRI) – 上海兽医研究所 is a national research institute specializing in major swine and avian infectious diseases, animal parasitic diseases, zoonosis, and anti-parasite drugs. The institute focuses on etiological biology, molecular epidemiology, pathogenesis, and applied research on diagnostic, preventive, and control technologies for animal diseases. It is also involved in the development of new animal vaccines and therapeutic drugs.
SHVRI serves as a branch of the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center and operates several key research platforms, including the National Laboratory of Animal Schistosomiasis Prevention and Control, the Key Laboratory of Animal Parasitology of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Animal-borne Food Safety Research Center, and the Key Laboratory of Veterinary Drugs Safety Evaluation and Residue Research of CAAS.
The institute has two animal facilities for pigs, chickens, and small animals. SHVRI has six departments: Animal Schistosomiasis, Animal Parasitology, Animal Pharmacology, Swine Infectious Diseases, Avian Infectious Diseases, Veterinary Public Health, and the Animal-borne Food Safety Research Center. The staff includes 131 members, with 90 scientific researchers.
Major research fields at SHVRI include:
- Prevention and control of swine infectious diseases
- Prevention and control of waterfowl diseases
- Animal parasitology and pharmacology
- Animal bacterial infectious diseases
- Animal protozoan diseases
- Animal influenza etiology and ecology
- Zoonotic pathogens biology and food safety
- Infectious diseases in small animals
