The College of Natural Resources and Environment at South China Agricultural University (SCAU) traces its roots to the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Chemistry, established in 1923 at the Guangdong Public Agricultural Specialized School. In 1935, the department began offering master’s degree programs in soil science, making it one of the earliest institutions in China to train master’s students in the field prior to the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The college now comprises several departments, including the Department of Soil Science, the Department of Ecology, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, the Department of Plant Nutrition, and the Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geoinformation. It offers six undergraduate majors: Ecology, Agricultural Resources and Environment, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geoinformation Science, and Agricultural Resource Management.
The college is home to 12 science and technology innovation platforms at the provincial and ministerial levels, in addition to the Sino-British Environmental Science Research Center, a national joint laboratory.
Currently, the college has 2,206 students, including 1,730 undergraduates, 396 master’s students, and 80 doctoral students. Its 154 faculty members include 34 professors and researchers.
