The College of Agronomy and Biotechnology at Southwest University (SWU) boasts a 90-year history and currently has 101 teaching staff members. It offers a PhD program in Crop Science and admits postgraduate students in areas such as crop genetic breeding, crop cultivation and tillage, agronomy, and the seed industry. The college has four undergraduate majors: agronomy, plant science and technology, rural regional development, and bio-breeding science. There are approximately 930 undergraduate and 570 graduate students enrolled.
The college hosts several key research platforms, including the Engineering Research Center for Southern Mountain Agriculture under the Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Germplasm Creation on the Upper Yangtze River under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (trial operation), and the Chongqing Scientific Observatory and Experiment Station of Crop Genetic Resources and Germplasm Creation. Its modern facilities enable research in areas such as crop breeding, quality analysis, physiology and biochemistry, cytogenetics, molecular markers, gene cloning, transgenics, biotechnology, facility cultivation, farming, and ecology.
Specialized in research on high-quality, high-yield, and high-efficiency crops, the college focuses on variety selection and breeding, gene exploration and functional analysis of key crop traits, stress adaptation and regulation, and advanced crop breeding technologies. It is internationally recognized for its work on kale-type yellow-seeded rapeseed, including biological and genetic mechanism analysis, germplasm innovation, and the development of new varieties. Current research emphasizes creating disease-resistant materials, understanding the genome and disease resistance mechanisms of rapeseed, improving yield formation in rice, and enhancing fiber development and yield quality in cotton.
