The College of Animal Science and Technology is one of the oldest colleges at Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University (NWAFU). It began enrolling undergraduate students in 1936 and graduate students in 1963.
The college has five departments: Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction; Animal Nutrition and Environmental Sanitation; Animal Production and Husbandry Engineering; Smart Animal Husbandry Science and Engineering; and Aquatic Science. Research focuses on cattle and sheep genetic engineering breeding, livestock genetic improvement, animal reproductive physiology and reproduction regulation, and animal nutrition metabolism and feed science. The college is particularly renowned for its work in cattle and sheep genetic evolution, gene editing technology, muscle development and lipid metabolism mechanisms in livestock, and digestive tract microbial function in cattle and sheep.
The college has 40 professors, 63 associate professors, and approximately 1,800 students. It operates 14 research platforms, including the Research Center for Modern Cattle Biotechnology, the Key Laboratory of Animal Biotechnology, the Key Laboratory of Livestock and Poultry Resources, and the Key Laboratory of Animal Genetics.
In addition, the college maintains six experimental and demonstration bases, including the Ankang Aquatic Products Experiment and Demonstration Station, the Yan’an Pig Raising Experiment and Demonstration Base, the Shiquan (Northern Shaanxi) Sericulture Experiment and Demonstration Base, the Beef Cattle Experiment and Demonstration Base, and the Dairy Goat (Northern Shaanxi, Jinchang Mutton Sheep) Experiment and Demonstration Base.
