The College of Plant Protection at Southwest University (SWU) has a history of over 70 years and offers doctoral and postdoctoral programs in plant protection, as well as master’s programs in plant pathology, agricultural insects and pest control, pesticide science, and biosafety. The college comprises three departments: Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Pesticide Science. It is home to 77 faculty members and 13 full-time postdoctoral fellows.
The college hosts several key research platforms, including the National Citrus Engineering Technology Research Center, the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Biosecurity and Green Production in the Upper Yangtze River (Ministry of Education), and the Citrus Engineering Research Center (Ministry of Education). Other facilities include the China-Belgium Joint Laboratory for International Cooperation on Sustainable Control of Crop Pests, Chongqing Municipal Key Laboratories for Entomology, Pest Control Engineering, and Plant Disease Biology, as well as the Chongqing Engineering Research Center for Fruit Tree Pests Biological Control.
The college has made significant advancements in pest and disease control for citrus, tobacco, Chinese herbs, and other crops. Its development of biocontrol products and green prevention and control technologies has been applied across Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, and other regions, covering nearly 150 million mu. For 15 consecutive years, it has hosted the Ministry of Agriculture’s “Training Course on Crop Pest and Disease Detection and Reporting Technology”, training more than 800 technical staff from 15 western provinces and cities.
Emphasizing both domestic and international collaboration, the college maintains partnerships with over 40 scientific and educational institutions worldwide. It has hosted more than 160 expert lectures and cooperative research initiatives and sent faculty members abroad more than 80 times for joint research in countries such as the U.S., U.K., and Germany. The establishment of the China-Belgium Joint Laboratory with Ghent University and the organization of over 10 international and domestic academic conferences in the past five years have further strengthened its academic development and global reach.
