College of Plant Protection

Founded in 1934, the College of Plant Protection at Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University (NWAFU) enrolled its first undergraduate students in 1936 and its first master’s students in 1960. Since 1984, the college has also offered doctoral programs. The college specializes in plant pathology, agricultural insect and pest control, pesticide science, and integrated pest management. It holds a leading position in research on wheat stripe rust, fusarium head blight, apple rot disease, wheat pulp, fruit tree budworm, and biopesticides.

The college has 112 full-time faculty and staff and operates 11 national, provincial, and ministerial research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Crop Stress Biology in Arid Regions, the Key Laboratory of Plant Protection Resources and Pest Management, and Asia’s largest insect museum. Other notable research centers include the National Innovation Base for Plant Pathology, the National Innovation Base for Crop Disease Resistance Breeding and Genetic Improvement, and an innovative base for disaster mechanisms and green pesticide management.

The Butterfly Branch of the Entomological Society of China and the Plant Disease Resistance Breeding Professional Committee of the Plant Pathology Society of China are affiliated with the college.
