Department of Economic Zoology

The Department of Economic Zoology at Zhejiang University, originally established as the Department of Sericulture in 1927, has evolved to encompass the fields of sericulture, apiculture, and aquaculture. It was one of the first departments in China to offer undergraduate courses in sericulture and to admit international students. The department holds a National Key Discipline in “Rearing Animals of Economic Importance”, focusing on these key subjects. It is also a recipient of funding from the prestigious “211 Project”, a significant honor among Chinese universities aimed at strengthening priority disciplines.

The department consists of 28 faculty members, including 10 professors, 11 associate professors, and 7 assistant professors. It houses a Comparative Molecular Biology Lab, a Germplasm Bank, and a Molecular Breeding Lab, along with two research centers specializing in applied biological resource and material engineering and the utilization of silkworm by-products.

Research areas include gene function and genetic engineering, technical support and quality evaluation for efficient production, disease prevention and control, silkworm by-product utilization, and the commercial production of related products.
