The Grape and Wine Research Institute of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GXAAS) was established in October 2009. The institute focuses on grape breeding, viticulture technology, winemaking, and processing. It has five specialized research laboratories: resource and genetic breeding, cultivation and quality control, winemaking technology, round leaf grape, and pest control. Additionally, the institute has four administrative sections: office, finance section, scientific research and management section, and results transformation and international cooperation.
The institute serves as the Nanning Comprehensive Experiment Station of the National Grape Industry Technology System and is a supporting unit of the Guangxi Grape Industry Innovation Team under the National Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System. It primarily conducts research related to the climatic characteristics of Guangxi and southern China, with a focus on breeding and screening new grape varieties that are high yielding, high quality, and resistant to adversity. Other research areas include the technological innovation of biannual grape cultivation in hot zones, as well as developing comprehensive supporting technologies for grapes that emphasize high yield, high quality, high efficiency, ecology, and safety. The institute is also engaged in research and development related to winemaking processes and storage technologies using grapes as raw materials.
The institute has played a key role in demonstrating and leading the development of the grape industry in tropical zones. To date, it has developed 14 new varieties of table and wine grapes suitable for cultivation in hot climates. The institute currently employs 30 people.
