The Hubei Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences– 湖北省农业科学院, located in Wuhan City at Wuchang South Lake, has a rich history dating back to the late Qing Dynasty. It was originally founded as the South Lake Agricultural Experiment Field by Zhang Zhidong, the Governor of Hubei Province. The academy consists of 10 specialized institutes that cover a broad spectrum of agricultural research, including grain crops, cash crops, plant protection, soil and fertilizer science, animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, fruit and tea, agricultural products processing, nuclear agriculture technology, agricultural quality standards and testing, biopesticides, Chinese herbs, and agricultural economics. One of its key areas of focus is sericulture, and it has a dedicated sericulture experimental station.
The research scope of the academy spans all aspects of agriculture in the province, with particular emphasis on germplasm resource utilization, hybrid rice breeding, vegetable breeding, plant protection, biopesticide development, animal disease prevention, and the cultivation of various specialties such as alpine vegetables, sweet potatoes, tea, livestock, and Chinese herbs. The academy employs 1,000 scientific and technical personnel, including 408 senior researchers.
In 2015, the Hubei Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, in collaboration with the Provincial Department of Agriculture, established the Hubei Provincial Agriculture Science and Technology Innovation Alliance, which includes new agricultural enterprises. The academy also participates in regional cooperation by joining the Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance with the Hunan and Jiangxi Provincial Academies of Agricultural Sciences. Additionally, the academy is involved in international research programs such as Horizon 2020.
