Hunan Fisheries Research Institute

The Hunan Fisheries Research Institute at the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HUNAAS) was established in December 1959 and specializes in aquatic science and technology research, fishery resource management, and related services. Its core activities include scientific research, continuing education, fishery product inspection and testing, environmental monitoring, technical training, academic exchange, and consulting. The institute is a member of the Yangtze River Basin Aquatic Biological Resources Monitoring Network and the Yangtze River Dolphin Rescue Alliance and serves as a national science education base.

The institute employs 68 staff members and operates two research and production test bases in Changsha and Yuanjiang. It manages 680 mu of high-standard experimental fish ponds, two fish hatching facilities covering 5,000 square meters, a 2,500-square-meter laboratory, and a 200-square-meter fish specimen museum housing over 5,000 aquatic animal specimens.

The institute hosts several technology promotion platforms, including the Dongting Lake Characteristic Indigenous Fish Conservation Center, the MARA Fishery Product Quality Inspection and Testing Center (Changsha), and the MARA Yangtze River Basin Aquatic Biological Resources Monitoring Hunan Station. It also operates the Hunan Province Aquatic Biological Resources Monitoring Center, the Hunan Province Fishery Environment Monitoring Station, and the Changsha Comprehensive Experimental Station for the National Bulk Freshwater Fish, Characteristic Freshwater Fish, Shrimp, and Crab Industry Technology System.

In collaboration with Hunan Normal University, the institute established the Fish Health Breeding Branch of the National Key Laboratory of Developmental Biology of Freshwater Fishes. It also jointly founded the Hunan Key Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Nutrition and Quality Regulation with Changsha College.
