The Hunan Provincial Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Research Institute (Hunan Provincial Livestock Breeding Station) at the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HUNAAS) was established in April 1964. It is responsible for scientific research, technology promotion, and product development in livestock and poultry genetic breeding, animal nutrition, veterinary medicine, new breeding technologies, and livestock and poultry product processing in Hunan Province. The institute currently employs 182 staff members and is structured around seven key disciplines: poultry, pig farming, grass-based herbivores, animal nutrition, veterinary medicine, livestock product processing, and waste resource utilization.
The institute has established three doctoral (master) graduate training sites, a postdoctoral research mobile station collaborative R&D center, a provincial key laboratory, a provincial veterinary engineering center, a pig breeding center, and a pig disease prevention and control center. It collaborates with over 50 enterprises, including Xiangcun Hi-Tech (Xiangcun Black Pig), Liushahe Animal Husbandry (Ningxiang Flower Pig), Feilong Animal Husbandry (Shaziling Pig), and Denong Animal Husbandry (Xiangxi Yellow Cattle). It also maintains strong academic ties with research institutions such as the Institute of Subtropical Agriculture Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hunan Agricultural University, and China Agricultural University, with a focus on the conservation, development, and utilization of local livestock and poultry germplasm resources. Additionally, the institute engages in international scientific cooperation with institutions in the United States, Myanmar, the Czech Republic, and Finland.
Key research areas include the conservation and breeding of local breeds such as Ningxiang pig, Xiangxi black pig, Shaziling pig, Daweizi pig, Qianshao flower pig, Xiangxi yellow cattle, Binhu buffalo, Xiangdong black goat, Xianghuang chicken, Linwu duck, Youxian duck, and Xupu goose. The institute has also established a national-level bull station, a provincial-level dairy cattle original breeding farm, and a breeding pig testing station. It operates a world-leading dairy cow production performance testing (DHI) center and a high-quality forage seed and seedling base, producing 580,000 high-quality beef cattle frozen semen annually, collecting 50,000 dairy cow production performance test data for MARA, and training over 1,000 professionals each year.
