The Institute for Agricultural Science and Technology Information at the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences was established in 1984. It comprises the institute’s testing center and various research teams from affiliated institutes. In March 2011, the Digital Agricultural Engineering Technology Research Center and the Agricultural Science and Technology Information Research Institute merged. As of 2019, the institute employs more than 50 staff members.
The institute’s research focuses on urban modern agriculture, agricultural technology and economics, rural development, agricultural market logistics, science and technology policies, and agricultural development strategies. It provides decision-making support to governmental leaders at various levels. The institute is recognized for its pioneering work in urban agriculture, a field it was the first in China to establish, and has engaged in extensive research collaborations with countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
The institute’s work on the application of information technology in agriculture began in the late 1970s with the creation of China’s first rice germplasm resource data management system. Over the decades, the institute has developed agricultural expert systems, precision agriculture technologies, and digital platforms. Its research now includes database construction and information processing technology, contributing to the growing strength and success of digital agriculture as a scientific discipline.
