The Horticultural Crops Research Institute of the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (YAAS) was founded in 1978. It is a provincial non-profit, social welfare research institution specializing in research on low-latitude plateau fruit and vegetable resources, variety selection and breeding, high-efficiency cultivation, quality control, and other related areas. The institute currently has 68 in-service staff members.
It has established several national and provincial research platforms, including the National Fruit Tree Germplasm Yunnan Endemic Fruit Tree Rootstock Nursery, the National Vegetable Improvement Center Yunnan Branch, the Ministry of Agriculture Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau Fruit Tree Scientific Observation Experiment Station, and the Yunnan Provincial Vegetable Germplasm Innovation and Supporting Industrial Technology Engineering Research Center.
The institute’s research focus includes apples, pears, peaches, bulk vegetables, and other fruits and vegetables, integrating them into the national modern agricultural industrial technology system. Over 50 new varieties of fruits and vegetables have been selected and bred, including the Yunnan eggplant series, Yunnan pepper series, Yunnan cabbage series, Yunnan red pear series, and Yunnan apple series. Additionally, the institute has made significant contributions to the high-efficiency cultivation of alpine summer and fall cold vegetables, sustainable fruit tree development technologies, and high-light-efficiency tree transformation technologies, all of which have played an important role in advancing the low-latitude plateau fruit and vegetable industry.
