The Institute of Fishery Sciences of the Tibet Academy of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Sciences (TAAAS) was officially established in 2015. Its primary responsibilities include strengthening scientific and technological innovation, focusing on the effective protection and efficient utilization of plateau characteristic aquatic resources, improving and regulating the aquatic environment, and providing theoretical and technical support for the formulation of regional sustainable development plans for aquatic resource protection.
The institute primarily focuses on Tibetan native fish as its main research object. It conducts aquaculture and breeding, fish disease prevention, and resource surveys across the entire Yarlung Zangbo River basin and important lakes in the region. The institute also engages in both basic and applied research in the areas of fish breeding, genetic breeding, fishery resources, fishery environmental protection, and fish disease prevention. Currently, the institute employs 25 staff members.
The institute operates several key facilities, including the Yarlung Zangbo River Fishery Resources Breeding Base (spanning 50 Mu) and an important endemic fish and aquatic germplasm resource farm of the Tibet Autonomous Region (spanning 137 Mu). Additionally, the institute has been approved for the Tibetan Aboriginal Fish Breeding and Utilization Technology Research Engineering Center and has established the Tibet Autonomous Region Fisheries Society, both of which have helped lay a solid foundation for the high-quality development of Tibet’s fisheries sector.
