The Institute of Plant Protection of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GXAAS) was founded in 1935, formerly known as the Plant Protection Group of Guangxi Agricultural Experiment Station. The institute currently has 71 employees.
The institute has 12 research teams focused on various aspects of crop pest prevention and control. These include teams specializing in grain crop pest prevention, fruit tree disease prevention and control, citrus pest management, banana crop disease management, agricultural biosecurity, pest biological control, and more. The research areas cover green pest control technologies, biological control of pests, pest resistance identification, invasive organism monitoring, and efficacy testing of new pesticides.
The institute operates a modern office laboratory building of 3,000 m², a temperature-controlled room and net room totaling 2,000 m², and a test base covering more than 100 acres. Among its research platforms are the MARA South China Key Laboratory of Green Prevention and Control of Fruits and Vegetables, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region National Crop Varieties Testing Station Disease Resistance Identification Laboratory, the Nanning Radar Monitoring Station for Migratory Pests, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Crop Seedling Safety Inspection Engineering Research Center, and the Sino-Vietnamese Joint Laboratory for Integrated Prevention and Control of Crop Pests and Diseases.
The Institute of Plant Protection has also developed significant international collaborations, particularly with ASEAN countries. It has established the China-Vietnam Joint Laboratory for Integrated Prevention and Control of Crop Pests and Diseases in Hanoi, Vietnam, which serves as a platform for promoting China’s plant protection technologies and training local experts. This partnership has led to successful implementation of pest control technologies, including large-scale demonstrations of high-yield varieties and suitable crop technologies in Vietnam.
In addition to international collaborations, the institute has participated in building several international cooperation platforms, such as the China-Myanmar Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Base and the China (Guangxi)-Myanmar Rice Quality Improvement Center. These efforts further strengthen the institute’s role in regional agricultural development and pest control research.
The institute also provides critical technical services, including pesticide registration, resistance identification, and seedling pest testing for agricultural enterprises across Guangxi and the entire country. The institute’s field efficacy testing of insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and other pesticides has resulted in nearly 10,000 field efficacy reports, providing scientifically validated data for the safe and rational use of pesticides in the field.
