Rapeseed Research Institute

The Rapeseed Research Institute of Guizhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences was founded in 1936. The institute conducts molecular and genetic research, breeding materials, gene discovery, genetic mechanism analysis, germplasm innovation, new variety breeding, hybrid combination preparation, new variety promotion and application, and high-quality edible oil research and development of rapeseed, perilla, special oil crops, rice, corn, vegetables, etc. It also conducts seed quality analysis and seed quality inspection, as well as research on seed processing, storage, and transportation technology. The institute formulates high-yield technical measures for different regions and cultivation methods, and is responsible for regional production, variety comparison trials, and demonstration and promotion of new varieties. The institute also carries out agricultural-related technical training and consulting services.

The institute has 85 employees. It operates a 66.07-hectare experimental base in Tangzhentou, Sinan County, a 71.5-hectare rapeseed innovation base in Weiyuan Community, Changshun County, a 42.47-hectare rapeseed breeding base in Niuchang Township, Baiyun District, and a 17.46-hectare Oil Research Technology Park in Guiyang National High-tech Industrial Zone.

Through technological innovation, 57 rapeseed varieties have been bred and approved, including 19 nationally approved varieties and 38 provincially approved varieties, covering 10 provinces and cities including Guizhou, Sichuan, and Chongqing. Five new peanut varieties have been bred and approved by Guizhou Province, and they have been widely promoted and applied in the province. Two new perilla varieties have been bred and approved by Guizhou Province.
