The National Germplasm Resources Chengmai Observation and Experiment Station of Hainan Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HNAAS), approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) in 2019, focuses on the research of tropical fruit trees, vegetables, grain crops, and specialty cash crops. Its primary goals are the observation, identification, and evaluation of agronomic traits, quality traits, resistance traits, molecular markers, and other characteristics of crop germplasm resources. The station aims to develop a technical system for the identification and evaluation of major crop germplasm resources and provide germplasm and technological support for cultivating varieties with independent intellectual property rights.
Key research tasks include:
- Precise Identification of Tropical Fruit Tree Germplasm Resources: This involves the collection, preservation, organization, and precise identification of germplasm resources for tropical fruit trees such as lychee, longan, pineapple nectar, rambutan, cashew, yellow peels, guava, and wild fruit trees in Hainan. The goal is to create new germplasm and conduct long-term observation and data sharing of these resources.
- Precise Identification of Vegetable Germplasm Resources: Focuses on the collection, preservation, organization, and precise identification of vegetable germplasm resources such as tomato, eggplant, pepper, bitter melon, cowpea, and watermelon. The aim is to cultivate excellent varieties, develop supporting cultivation techniques, and conduct long-term observation and resource sharing.
- Precise Identification of Germplasm Resources of Major Food Crops: Targets the collection, preservation, and identification of germplasm resources for key food crops in southern China, including wild rice, hybrid rice, specialty rice, and corn. The research involves selecting and breeding excellent varieties, developing cultivation techniques, and conducting long-term observation and data sharing.
- Precise Identification of Germplasm Resources of Major Cash Crops: Focuses on the collection, preservation, organization, and precise identification of germplasm resources for significant cash crops such as oil tea, mulberry, tea tree, and southern medicinal plants. The objective is to select and breed excellent varieties, research efficient cultivation techniques, and carry out long-term observation and resource sharing.
