Institute of Plant Protection

The Institute of Plant Protection of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences is Xinjiang’s only provincial-level research institute dedicated to the study and control of agricultural and forestry pests and diseases. It has 10 innovation teams covering major crops and sectors, including cotton, wheat, rice, maize, fruits, vegetables, sugar beet, cucurbits, edible fungi, weeds, and rodent and pesticide safety. With more than 80 staff members, including over 40 PhD researchers, the institute combines strong scientific capacity with practical expertise in pest monitoring, green control, and biosecurity.

The institute hosts national and regional research platforms such as the MARA Key Laboratory for Integrated Management of Crop Pests in Northwest Oases, the National Plant Protection Observation Station in Korla, and the China–Central Asia Joint Research Center for Pest Control. It operates extensive experimental bases, including natural enemy breeding centers, edible fungi and greenhouse vegetable trial sites, and transgenic cotton detection and monitoring facilities. Its 4,450 m² laboratory space is equipped for pest identification, monitoring, resistance studies, biocontrol research, and GMO safety assessments, with more than 1,100 advanced instruments.

Applied research has produced innovative technologies for the control of both invasive species (e.g. hibiscus mealybug, Colorado potato beetle, rice water weevil) and major local pests (e.g. cotton bollworm, wheat stripe rust, maize stalk rot). These technologies are widely applied across Xinjiang’s grain, cotton, fruit, and vegetable sectors, contributing to sustainable production and environmental protection.
