The Hainan Sanya Breeding Station of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, established in 2007, provides critical off-season (“South Breeding”) support for crop variety development. Located in Haitang District, Sanya, the station manages 160 mu (≈ 10.7 ha) of land with 50 modern greenhouses covering 65 mu (≈ 4.3 ha), 75 mu (≈ 5.0 ha) of open-field breeding plots, a 900 m² research and office building, a bio-breeding laboratory, and a small meteorological station. Recent upgrades include a new 778 m² glasshouse for gene-edited seedlings.
The station functions as a service hub, supporting more than 20 research groups from seven institutes of the Xinjiang Academy with annual breeding work for 11 major crops, including melon, watermelon, maize, cotton, rapeseed, tomato, pepper, sunflower, peanut, soybean, and sorghum. Each year, it handles over 10,000 experimental breeding materials. Over the years, it has contributed to the release of nearly 200 crop varieties, with 58 additional varieties approved since the 14th Five-Year Plan.
Facilities include advanced irrigation, accommodation, and laboratory systems, ensuring comprehensive support for variety development, identification, and seed multiplication.
Recognized as a “National Advanced South Breeding Unit” and host to multiple demonstration platforms and training bases, the station integrates research, production, and education.
