Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment

The Institute of Agricultural Resources and Environment of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, founded in 1979, is a multidisciplinary center focusing on soil, water, crop nutrition, and sustainable resource management in arid and semi-arid regions. Research covers soil utilization and improvement, crop nutrition and fertilization, farmland irrigation and water-saving technologies, tillage and cultivation, precision fertilization, land evaluation and planning, agricultural information technologies, and the recycling of organic and urban waste for agriculture.

The institute hosts nine innovation teams and three Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, including the laboratories for saline–alkali soil improvement, oasis environmental management, and oasis water-saving agriculture. It also operates eight long-term observation and experimental platforms across Xinjiang, covering soil quality monitoring, saline soil utilization, water and fertilizer management, and non-point source pollution research. Facilities include 2,000 m² of laboratory space and advanced instrumentation for soil–plant–atmosphere monitoring, greenhouse gas flux analysis, and environmental data collection.

Applied research addresses major challenges for Xinjiang’s agriculture, with achievements in saline soil remediation, integrated water–fertilizer management, crop water-saving irrigation technologies, and precision fertilization for fruit and cotton systems. The institute also advances biodegradable film applications, organic and biofertilizer production, and remote sensing/IoT-based agricultural monitoring platforms. With 150 staff members (including nearly 40 PhD scientists) and a strong record of technology transfer, the institute plays a central role in supporting sustainable agriculture, environmental protection, and resource-efficient production in Northwest China.
