Update: Over the past two decades, China has emerged as a major player in global organic agriculture. The country now has the world’s fourth-largest area of certified organic farmland and is the third-largest organic food market, accounting for 11% of global sales. Yet organic farming still represents less than 1% of China’s agricultural land, highlighting both the sector’s progress and its significant growth potential.
This updated study, featuring the latest available data from 2024, traces the development of China’s organic agriculture and food sector, examines recent policy and regulatory changes, analyses domestic market and trade trends, and explores the opportunities and challenges surrounding organic certification, market access, and international trade.
