The Cotton Research Institute of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences is a key hub for cotton science in Xinjiang. It has six innovation teams focusing on germplasm resources, early-maturing cotton breeding, and molecular breeding. Research activities cover germplasm collection and utilization, new variety development, cultivation technologies, demonstration, and technical services.
The institute operates the Xinjiang Key Laboratory for Cotton Genetic Improvement and Smart Production, three specialized research centers, cotton seed bases, and affiliated technology companies. With a staff of nearly 60 researchers—one-third holding doctoral degrees—the institute combines strong breeding expertise with applied research capacity.
It plays a central role in advancing new cotton varieties and mechanization-friendly cultivation systems adapted to arid environments.
