The Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute of the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences is a key center for horticultural research in arid and semi-arid regions. Its 12 innovation teams focus on tomato, pepper, grape, apple, pear, jujube, walnut, almond, apricot, melon, and other fruits and vegetables. Research covers germplasm collection and evaluation, variety breeding and introduction, cultivation technologies, and demonstration and technology transfer.
The institute hosts 10 national and regional platforms, including the National Fruit Tree Germplasm Repository in Luntai and the Key Laboratory for Fruit and Vegetable Genomics and Genetic Improvement in Xinjiang. It has made advances in areas such as tomato genomics and salt tolerance, cold resistance in fruit trees, and sustainable vineyard management. Applied research has yielded widely adopted varieties and technologies, such as new tomato and melon cultivars, walnut dense planting renovation, and greenhouse intercropping models, with demonstration areas exceeding 4 million mu (approx. 267,000 hectares).
