Binkel wheat: Reviving an ancient grain in Alpine and Pre-Alpine regions
This case study focuses on the EUREGIO-supported project to revitalize the ancient grain Binkel wheat, historically grown in the Alpine and Pre-Alpine regions. From January to December 2021, the project involved agrarian-historical research, trial cultivation of 30 Binkel accessions, nutritional analysis of selected varieties, and the development of marketing materials to raise awareness about this heritage crop. Results showed that while Binkel wheat has relatively low yields, it thrives in poor soils and high altitudes and contains higher vitamin levels than modern varieties, highlighting its potential health and environmental benefits. The project, led by the Bavarian State Institute for Agriculture in collaboration with UNESCO Biosphere Parks and the Tirol Gene Bank, demonstrated the value of Binkel wheat for biodiversity and sustainable Alpine agriculture.
